After an initial night in Caracas, transfer to the city of Merida, located on a high plateau surrounded by 'Las Cinco Aguilas Blancas' - Venezuela's five highest peaks including Pico Bolivar (5,007m). After time soaking up the atmosphere and sampling the local delicacy - Andean trout, head south to Sierra Nevada National Park, encompassing an area of 130,000 acres, part of the Andean ranges and offering fine examples of high mountain pine forests, páramo, Frailejones (endemic shrub), glacial lagoons and a wide variety of animals. Here to is Mucubaji Lagoon - the largest lagoon in the park, and behind it the suitably majestic Mucunuque Peak (4,672m). Running parallel to the Sierra Nevada is a slightly lower chain of mountains – La Culata, home to one of the world’s largest flying birds - Andean Condor, with wingspans of up to 3.5m. NEW TOUR - RORAIMA TEPUI & ANGEL FALLS

Walks Worldwide’s exhilarating new 16-day fully guided walking holiday in Venezuela’s Gran Sabana treks to the most famous tepui of all – Roraima, inspiration for Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, and visits the world’s highest single drop waterfall – Angel Falls. Departures from London are available daily, year-round (wet season is May-November, but don’t be put off, wildlife is more active during this time).

The journey begins in tropical Caracas, a city of soaring skyscrapers, old colonial buildings and some of the hottest and steamiest salsa venues anywhere. Depending on arrival time, explore the city before transferring to Puerto Ordaz on the mighty Orinoco River. From here, head south along the Pan American Highway to the savannah lands of La Gran Sabana. This green plateau situated 1,000 metres above sea level, is scattered with dramatic mist-shrouded table mountains known as tepuis. These near vertical formations dominating the surrounding plateau, were the inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic The Lost World. Biologically unique, these mesas are some of the oldest rock formations on earth, boasting distinctive animal and plant life. Four days of trekking through an impressive landscape of savannah and virgin rainforest ensue, before tackling the most infamous of all tepuis, Roraima. Often described as an ‘island in the sky’ due to the frequently mist-enveloped savannah below making Roraima appear to float in the clouds. It’s a five-day round trip to the summit of Roraima and back, and although no mountaineering skills are necessary, it’s nevertheless a challenging trek. The holiday culminates with a visit to the incredible Angel Falls, where a dip beneath the falls surely offers the ultimate in refreshment!

QUEBEC'S WINTER WONDERLAND ADVENTURE

From Montreal, travel north to Jacques Cartier Park near the Saint Lawrence River in time to meet musher-guides and dogs for a 20km exploration deep in to the Canadian winter forest. After a cosy night in a wood cabin, continue the husky sled ride through forest wilderness before exchanging 'dog power' for 'horse power' on a 100km snowmobile expedition. Next, proceed to the Charlevoix region in the heart of the Canadian Shield, one of the Earth’s oldest geological features, formed by an ancient meteor impact. Here, don snowshoes and head out in to some of the region’s 6,000-square-kilometres of dramatic rolling terrain, fjords, headlands and bays. RIDE THE ‘CHIHUAHUA’ & HIKE THE CANYON - MEXICO’S COPPER CANYON

Journey from the sparkling Sea of Cortez to the arid canyons of Mexico’s Sierra Madre along the spectacular Chihuahua al Pacifico railroad, then hike the world’s largest canyon system, the magnificent Copper Canyon, deeper and grander in places than its more famous US counterpart. Later, sip margaritas at sunset and rest weary limbs in stunningly located wilderness lodges and beautifully restored haciendas. The journey begins with a spectacular rail journey on the Copper Canyon railroad, officially known as the Chihuahua al Pacifico, into the Sierra Madre Mountains, through dozens of tunnels and over countless bridges and vertiginous viaducts, to the wild-west town of Urique. Overnight at a wilderness lodge perched precipitously on the rim of the canyon. Walking boots at the ready, cross the Urique River and ascend rapidly through thorn forest to a beautiful campsite in a grapefruit grove. Hike in the cool shadows of the towering canyon walls, climbing up through chaparral and ever-changing vegetation to the summit of La Yesca (4,399ft) where views open out every which way over the stunning Urique Canyon. FEEL THE HEAT - VOLCANO CLIMBING IN ECUADOR

Want to climb a fiery volcano but draw the line at melting your boots? Walk Worldwide’s 16-day tour of Ecuador’s hot and high places includes the physically demanding climbs of four volcanoes - Mt Imbabura (4,630 metres), North Illiniza (5,100 metres), Cotopaxi (5,897 metres) and Chimborazo (6,310 metres). Tour departs London 6th November 08.

Leave Quito, the Equatorial Monument and the colourful market at Otavalo and hike around beautiful Lake Cuicocha. Make the first of four ascents by taking the rocky route to the top of Mt. Imbabura. Drive through the ‘Avenue of Volcanoes’, visiting the hot springs of Papallacta on the way, take an ‘easy scramble’ up North Illiniza, with great views of snowy Cotopaxi, ending the day in the luxurious surroundings of a restored hacienda. After a final ‘glacier school’, leave at the crack of dawn to summit Cotopaxi, a 6-10 hour climb on one of the world’s highest active volcanoes. An even earlier start (before midnight) is necessary for the ascent of Chimborazo, the largest of the peaks on the tour, climbing through the night to reach the summit. You are now at the furthest point from the centre of the earth!

LAND OF LIBERTY - 19-DAY VENEZUELAN EXPEDITION

This week in 1821, the Battle of Carabobo was fought between independence fighters and Spanish Royalist forces, resulting in a decisive victory - the liberation of Venezuela. Explore a land of Andean summits, tropical jungles and the highest waterfall in the world, Angel Falls, and discover exactly what they were fighting for during Walks Worldwide’s guided, 19-day The Heart of Venezuela expedition, departing 16th October 2008.

After an initial night in Caracas, continue to the historic city of Merida (1,625m) from where the teleferico (cable car) ascends to 4,765 metres offering views across to the country's highest mountain, Pico Bolivar. On to Sierra de la Culata National Park for vast windswept panoramic vistas, massive varieties of wildflowers and endangered mammal species including the Spectacled Bear and Andean Condor. Drive to the highest road point in Venezuela (4,125m) then hike through traditional Andean villages to Pan de Azucar. Descend through areas colonised by rare giant Frailejón plants and Coloradito trees in one of the Andes most beautiful valleys before returning to Merida. Fly via Caracas to Ciudad Bolivar, an atmospheric colonial river town. From here, continue to the frontier town of Santa Elena, starting point for explorations into Gran Sabana and Roraima, which host an abundance of endemic flora and fauna. The fully supported trek heads through indigenous Pemon Indian communities, across savannah, grassland and along ridges radiating out from the tepui (tabletop mountain). Cross rivers and walk through dense cloud forest packed with lush plants, to the base of Monte Roraima. On the summit, a spectacular campsite awaits - a 'cave hotel' offering stunning evening panoramas. Enjoy a day's exploration of weather-eroded stone sculptures, lichen encrusted black rock and chasms filled with carnivorous plants, pass through the crystal incrusted and aptly named ‘Valley of the Crystals’ to ‘Triple Point’ where the borders of Venezuela, Brazil and Guayana meet. Fly from Santa Elena to the old gold-mining base of Canaima and canoe along the Carrao River rapids, passing native settlements on the riverbank and spotting birdlife including Scarlet Macaw, Black Vulture and Green Ibis, en route to the island camp. After a relaxing night spent in hammocks, continue through tropical forest to the base of Angel Falls – and a refreshing dip under the waterfalls’ mist! Finally, return to Canaima for flights back to Caracas and the UK.
